Off the Rack: Batman The Widening Gyre

Batman The Widening Gyre #1 was solicited in June 2009 and was announced as a monthly 6-issue miniseries penciled once again by Walt Flanagan. The issue surprisingly shipped on time in August of 2009 and the story, which was apparently set in recent continuity and featured fan favorite Bat-girlfriend Silver St. Cloud, was actually fun and engaging. Smith deftly re-introduced Silver into the Bat continuity and then paraded out a host DCU villains for Batman to engage while he simultaneously reignited his romance with Ms. St. Cloud.

The Digital Matrix: The Last Airbender for Wii

airbenderThe Last Airbender for the Wii video game follows pretty much the same plot as the recent movie just out in theaters by M. Night Shyamalan.  Thankfully, it seems that Shyamalan had very little to do with the game.

The familiar story of Aang and Zuko is recreated allowing the player to play these two characters in their respective portions of the story.  You also get to play the Blue Spirit for one chapter.  The game takes some liberties, of course, by extending particular scenes in order to give you plenty of gaming with action and challenges.

Ticket Stubs: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Preview Screening

scott-pilgrimThe Fist got access to a preview screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World*:

As a fans of pop culture, we grow attached to certain works. Maybe too attached. When there is news that our favorite comic is going to be made into a movie other cross-media, there is a certain level of pain and heartache. It is rare that a writer and/or director is going to fully understand the source material and not thoroughly wreck what we hold dear.

Thankfully, the film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim actually is everything we fans wanted it to be.

NOTE: This article DOES NOT contain spoilers beyond what has been shown in various trailers.

The Big Con: As Seen at SDCC Comic Con 2010

fist-full-of-comics-sdccFollowers of the Fist,

As your man at the floor at San Diego Comic Con 2010, I did my best to grab document some of the sights of the floor for those poor fans stuck at home. Below is a modest attempt to capture the absolutely overwhelming convention. You won’t believe how big it is until you attend and see for yourself. If you have any questions about the photos, feel free to post in the comments and I’ll do my best to explain what it is I was photographing, if I can remember that is ;0p

Off The Rack: X-Factor #207

Peter David really knows how to write a comic book. He has all the action and excitement that superheroes should have with enough detective Noir and surprising storytelling to keep you wanting more. Typically, David likes to split up his team and have them working in different directions. In this issue, one storyline continues to deal with David’s recent surprise revelation that Rictor and Shatterstar are lovers.

Ex Libris: Monster Slayers

Monster_SlayersA few years ago, a quirky illustrated book entitled A Practical Guide to Monsters was published, authored by a now-missing wizard named Zendric. Within this tome the description of a number of shapeshifters, goblinoids, and aberrations could be found, explaining their weaknesses, strengths, and general lifestyle.

Now this Practical Guide is being used as the source material for a young adult novel, Monster Slayers, a fantasy adventure about two teenage boys and an elf girl questing to save friends and family from a band of gnolls. But be prepared – in a world infused with magic, things are often not what they seem!

Ticket Stubs (P)review: Machete

IGN.com posted a red band trailer for the Robert Rodriguez flick based on the trailer that was shown with Planet Terror a few years back. This trailer is not work safe and not for the squeamish AT ALL. The ‘rope’ swing sequence is fairly interesting and will have to be worked into a gaming session sometime soon.

You will need to enter age verification to view the trailer since the trailer is not for all ages. Falsify your age at your own risk.
