Off the Rack: Superman: World of New Krypton #7

300px-Superman_-_World_of_New_Krypton_Vol_1_7Issue #6 of Superman: World of New Krypton concluded with Kal-El staring at his costume uttering his iconic phrase, “This is a job for Superman!” Ral-Dar had attempted to assonate General Zod and fled to Earth. Apparently, Superman followed him. Issue #7 begins with a costumed Superman returning to New Krypton with the body of Ral-Dar in his arms. There is a disruption of story continuity here. What happened? Well, Codename: Patriot happened.

The latest Superman crossover, Codename: Patriot united the family of Super books yet again: Superman, Supergirl, Action Comics, and Superman: World of New Krypton. The little triangle issue counter has even been reset for this latest story arc. I did not follow this crossover, so I do not know what happened to Superman on earth. Despite the jarring break between issues, Superman: World of New Krypton continues to be an enjoyable comic.

This issue continues to follow the political conspiracy engulfing New Krypton. Kandor is on the verge of war with Earth, and with General Zod in stasis, no one is sure how to handle this delicate and dangerous situation. The focus of this issue is on dialog, and it comes across as natural and has a feeling importance. This is clearly the hand of Greg Rucka at work. There is very little action in this issue and I find that refreshing for a Superman title.

The art of Pete Woods is slowly growing on me. When he replaced Gary Frank in Action Comics I was immediately opposed to his work. I loved Frank’s work in that book and honestly, I would have viewed any replacement with contempt. However, Pete Woods has a clean style and Nei Ruffino inks his pencils beautifully. My only real complaint is that all of his characters look the same when he draws them from a distance. A stunning Gary Frank cover once again graces this issue!

I have been enjoying this series since the first issue; in fact, it is the only Super book I am currently reading. Robinson and Rucka have been scripting one of the most unique Superman stories told in a very long time. However, there is one thing that has been bothering me: what has Lois Lane been up to? What of their marriage? With Clark now on New Krypton, they are essentially in a long distance relationship. Surely this is placing a strain on their marriage, but it has yet to be addressed. I fear for their relationship. Has Clark forgotten Lois? Is Lois angry with Clark for leaving her? These are important questions yet we are given nothing, not even a phone call between them. Despite this grievance, Superman: World of New Krypton is a fantastic comic book and probably the best Super book currently on the stands.
