And Another Thing… is a sequel to the popular science fiction series Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. This book is written by Eoin Colfer (author of the popular children’s series about Artemis Fowl). Eoin takes up where Douglas left off taking cowardly Arthur Dent on another adventure following the destruction of Earth. Again.
Arthur Dent is joined by his best friend and alien Ford Prefect, the previous object of his affection Trillian, their daughter Random and of course Zaphod Beeblebrox, President of the Galaxy, as they try to find the last of humanity in space and make a home for themselves. Along the way, they must avoid attacking Vogons, try to get the attention of the Norse god Thor, and convince a green immortal alien bent on insulting everyone in the universe on helping them with their plight.
Eoin Colfer delivers a well written story that will appease fans of the Hitchhiker’s series. However, he doesn’t bring anything new to the story. Everything he brings, is bits and pieces of Adams’ work and just enhanced ever so slightly as to not disturb the original version. If a person who doesn’t like it when they muddle around with somebody else’s creation like unmasking Spider-Man, then this will be a good story for you. Eoin is good writer and knows how to keep his audience attentive. But if you are looking for some of the randomness and strange surprises that the Hitchhiker’s series usually delivers, then you might be disappointed. Its all about personal preferances on this one.
In my own opinion, it would probably to let the great series stay that way and move on to other things. Let Eoin go back to writing the children’s series he does so well with. However, I wouldn’t throw the book away either. I’ll keep it on the shelf, but recognize it for the work that it is.
