The New Mutants have grown up a lot in the past couple decades. Years ago, they were a team of teenage mutants who hoped to train hard enough to become X-Men. You should be careful what you wish for.
The members of the New Mutants haven’t teamed together in a long time. Since their breakup, Sunspot joined the Hellfire Club, Warlock went back into space, Magick got lost in Limbo, Moonstar lost her mutant powers, and Cypher died.
Recently, the last of mutants have gathered on the island Utopia. Cypher came back from the dead as a mutant zombie with increased powers, making him a force to be reckoned with (his new abilities saved the day in the recent Second Coming storyline). Also returning is a damaged Magick, who stole part of Pixie’s soul, and Warlock, who recently had to kill for the first time. Dani Moonstar now has the Norse powers of a Valkyrie, and Karma lost her leg.
In this issue of New Mutants, the team is taken by their leader Cannonball to relax and regroup themselves on a recreational leave. It is a time to reflect on recent events, remember old times, and hopefully come back together as a family. Unbeknownst to them, however, are a group of elite soldiers preparing to attack. These dark warriors are aware of Magick and her time in Limbo; having spent some time there themselves, they are determined to bring her down.
Certainly seems like the New Mutants have turned full circle and are back to where they originally began, but on closer examination these characters have grown and changed in small and unusual ways. They’ve matured and it is interesting to see how their dynamics have changed and in some cases stayed the same.
New Mutants definitely has all that you’d expect from an X-Men book, but the team manages to stay away from the heavy story lines that other X books carry, yet still remaining ‘in the family’.
