Turn Me On: Covert Affairs - Communication Breakdown

th_covert_rolling-stoneThis week’s episode of USA Network’s newest hit, Covert Affairs, focuses on Auggie (Christopher Gorham) the blind tech guru that helps Annie (Piper Perabo) on her weekly missions. Never one to let his disability stand in his way, Auggie has been pushing for field duty and his time has come.

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead

Auggie, with his advanced knowledge of computers, is the perfect person to locate a hacker who has developed a code that disrupts everything from television to the Internet. The one piece of information that Auggie doesn’t have going into the mission is that the hacker may be his ex-girlfriend, Natasha Petrovna (Liane Balaban).

During his first field mission since losing his sight, Auggie must contend with the F.B.I., his friends at the C.I.A. and the Russian mob all while trying to complete his mission. Gorham does a great job accurately playing a visually challenged agent and this episode showcases his talents. In a scene that is an homage to the Sean Connery classic, From Russia with Love, Auggie kicks ass on a moving train. In that film, Bond (Connery) fights Donald Grant (Robert Shaw) on a moving train while trying to protect the beautiful Russian cipher clerk Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi). This is not the only James Bond reference in the episode. Earlier in the story, Annie tells Auggie that “James Bond was a lonely old man,” when she realizes that he is sleeping with a woman to learn her source.

Covert Affairs is a great show for fans of the spy genre and mixes skillfully choreographed action sequences with well written dialog. Covert Affairs airs on USA Network on Tuesday @ 10pm. Check your local listings for repeats throughout the week.
