Ticket Stubs (P)review: Lost Boys: The Thirst

lost-boys-the-tribeAs the lost boys and girls of San Cazador prepare to party under the Blood Moon, an alpha vampire conspires to turn these unsuspecting ravers into an army of undead. The only thing that stands between him and the annihilation of the entire human race is the infamous vampire fighting Frog Brothers. Armed with double-barrel holy water balloon launchers and multi-arrow crossbows, Edgar (Corey Feldman) and Alan Frog (Jamison Newlander) join forces to kick some blood-sucker butt in this latest high-energy, action packed adventure in the Lost Boys franchise.

The Frog Brothers are back in Lost Boys: The Thirst, the second sequel to 1987’s Lost Boys. The film is a direct-to-DVD release, and Warner Brothers has announced a street date of October 12, which means there will be plenty of time to buy a copy before your Halloween movie marathon. Although I didn’t get a chance to see the screening at Comic Con, I did get a chance to sit down for a discussion with Corey Feldman (Edgar Frog).

Feldman (notable child star beyond his work as Frog) describes the film like this: “in a nut shell, it’s the return of the Frog brothers,” and for many fans that’s very good news. For Feldman, Lost Boys “capsulized” the music, fashion, and pop culture of 1986 and he feels that The Thirst and The Tribe (2008’s installment)manage to capture current culture in the same way. He specifically points to YouTube and Girls Gone Wild as signs of the time in The Tribe.

In the same way, The Thirst sees The Lost Boys franchise poking fun at a certain tween vampire romance. According to Feldman, “The whole idea is to acknowledge it and kind of give a slap on the back to that series, but it’s about the Frog brothers.” The film’s plot features an author who writes a series of vampire romance books who enlists Edgar to save her son from an army of newborn vampires.

Feldman also acknowledges that The Tribe was “open to mixed reviews,” but he seems confident that this is an even stronger film, and the Con buzz seemed to back up this confidence.
Lost Boys will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray on October, 12. It is currently available for pre-order from Amazon.
