Picture if you will, a wide eyed youth, in Ireland for his first time, going out for a lunch. Now picture this youth, fresh from his first tour of the Guinness Brewery looking for food and all of this happening on Saint Patrick’s Day of all days. He stumbles upon a pub with his companions where he orders Shepard’s Pie. Meaty and warm it fills him and preps him for the night to come.

There are some sure signs of Spring here in Northwest Ohio such as the melting snow and the buds on the trees. In the last few years another sign that Spring is near is the release of Granite City’s Burning Barn Irish Red. The release of this beer is timed right around Saint Patrick’s Day which as you know is three days before the arrival of Spring.

January 25th is Scottish poet’s Robert Burns birthday so it is fitting that Granite City chose the date for their keg tapping party for officially releasing their Scottish Ale. It seems like it was only last month (I think it was) that we had the keg tapping party for the 1,000th Batch and now the time has come for a new batch to flow from the taps at this amazing restaurant chain.

Here, in the Black Swamp of Ohio, we have a bastion of beer. A chain restaurant out of Minnesota, Granite City Food & Brewery (GCFB) has one location in the Toledo/Maumee area, fast becoming a haven to fans of the hop laden beverage. Granite City offers members of its ‘Mug Club’ exclusive events several times a year, in which they preview the newest seasonal or specialty beer from the brewery. This month, GCFB released a special brew to celebrate the 1,000th batch brewed at its Sioux Falls location.

Harcore 81, the second album from Canadian punk rockers D.O.A. is often credited as the first actual reference to the term used to label the steroid-pumped second wave of the American punk rock movement. Thirty some-odd years later we have witnessed the wax and wane of many adherents of the genre, each placing their personal stamp on the music’s basic template of fast, faster, fastest. The Vancouver B.C. based D.O.A., led by founder Joey “Shithead” Keithly ranks among the most important of these (Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat etc.) Though the musical legacy of these bands is one of considerable artistic merit and enormous influence, it sadly has never translated into much by way of commercial success.
