Ex Libris Review: Imaginalis

In Imaginalis by J.M. DeMatteis, 12-year-old Mehera Beatrice Crosby is devastated when her favorite fantasy book series is cancelled. For Mehera, the fantasy world of Imaginalis is more important than her own reality. She feels a closer affinity with the characters in the books than she does with her own classmates. Deep in her heart, she knows they are real. After all her attempts to bring back the series have failed, she makes a final, desperate wish. Defying reason, logic, and the possible, the characters of Imaginalis are drawn into Mehera’s world. She learns that the series was cancelled because the world of Imaginalis is dying. And she alone holds the key to its survival: belief in the impossible.

The Journal Guy

This year at both Origins ’10 and Gen Con ’10 I saw many companies represented selling gaming wares and accessories.  Some of them are highly useful.  Some are really strange.  I was pleased to learn of a small company offering handmade journals for sale.

Ex Libris: The Ghost King

coverThe Ghost King, by R.A. Salvatore  is the epitome of what I have come to expect from a Drizzt story ramped up to awesome. This is the third and final book in the Transitions Trilogy that is intended to help us breach the gap between the 3rd edition of the Forgotten Realms and the 4th edition of the setting. It also seems to have the implied purpose of providing some much needed growth to characters who have essentially been stagnant since their inception with a few noted (and often heavy handed) attempts in previous novels. This book is not successful in achieving natural and meaningful growth for all of our characters but it does bring about some significant change and highlights what it is like when there is a world being ravaged by Spellplague, the world shaking event that introduces 4th edition D&D to the Forgotten Realms.

The Digital Matrix: Reverb for 5/2

BlackwiiA picture says a million words, but I’ll add a few more to it.  It’s hard to walk around the Internet looking for game related news without bumping into this picture.  A sleek and sexy color of the Wii.  Many countries have this particular item already and the only real news is the rumors flying that it’s finally coming state side soon.  What is the likelihood of this being real? Very Good.

Roll the Dice: Player’s Handbook Races – Dragonborn

Cover-artOf all the races presented in the original Player’s Handbook of the 4th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, two races stood out as being new – dragonborn and tieflings. Both of these races had appeared in previous editions (dragonborn cropping up in the 3e book Races of the Dragon), but their 4th edition counterparts were significantly different, thematically at least. Bits of descriptive text dropped references to an ancient empire of Arkhosia, and the war with the tieflings that destroyed it, but the core flavor of the race was still not as defined as some would’ve liked. Dragon Magazine#365 tried to amend this with an article entitled ‘The Ecology of the Dragonborn,’ which has been expanded upon by the recent 32-page release, Player’s Handbook Races: Dragonborn. If you are playing a dragonborn character, wish to play one in the future, or are a DM who wants to know more about the core flavor of the race, this publication may be right up your alley…

Roll of the Dice: Underdark (4e)

Underdark from Wizards of the Coast for 4e D&D is a book that should give a DM everything that they need to run a game in the deadly underground setting below many fantasy realms in the game. And in this book succeeds in doing just that, IF you are willing to accept their story for the Underdark, a story which is vastly different than any previous story of the place. [...]

Turn Me On: Fate/Stay Night

FSN2Fate/Stay Night, what an odd name for a title. As far as I can see, it has little or nothing to do with the actual Anime with the possible accept ion of Fate. But what is fate really?  Some would argue it doesn’t even exist. Fate, Destiny, an inevitable course of events. Some of us accept it. Some of us fight against it. For others it is thrust upon them. The Holy Grail Wars have been fought for centuries. Seven masters are selected by fate seals that enable them to summon servants to quest for the Holy Grail in a winner take all battle that will grant the victor and their servant one wish. Life for Shiro Emiya is going to get a lot more complicated.

Turn Me On: Death Note Relight: Visions of a God

deathnote_main

Death Note is a TV series based off of a comic, serialized in Shonen Jump. The TV series has been airing on Cartoon Network for a little while now, and the comic has been published to completion and collected in twelve graphic novels. I’ve only read the comic, and seen bits of the TV show, just to give you a gauge on where I’m coming from. ‘Death Note Relight: Visions of a God‘ is a retelling of the Death Note story in a 130 minute presentation.
