There will be comics aimed at every comic reader from the mainstream like Spider-man and Superman to independents like Mouse Guard. Several publishers are even putting out free comics aimed at the youngest of readers with titles like Marvel Adventures and Tiny Titans. A list of comics that you local shop should have available can be located at this site, http://www.freecomicbookday.com/comics.asp. I have unilaterally decided to drop the ‘and Cards’ bit. It wouldn’t even have been in the website address, but someone else grabbed the domain name of ‘Monarch Comics’ before me so I had no choice. I just think it seems silly to continue to refer to our long dead and buried past as any sort of card dealers. Yes, yes, I know that I must admit to a certain amount of culpability over the fact that I am wet, but never let it be said that I pass up the opportunity for a good gripe-fest. The story (such as it is) begins thusly: I was hard at work Thursday evening, racing around the store trying to simultaneously trying to help a customer find what they were looking for while putting the final touches on my August orders. I had just checked the customer out and I glanced at the clock and realized with a start that if I didn’t get my junk together and get out the door that I was in danger of missing the bus ride home. Considering this was one of the rare days that my partner and I would be meeting on the same bus I was going to everything in m power to make it. I threw all myself in my bag and ran out the door, leaving Steve gaping at the speed at which I moved. (Steve, beloved owner of Monarch Cards & Comics to those of you not in the know, has a saying that he has been using the entire 20 years I’ve worked for him. “If you don’t think the dead come back to life than just hang around here until closing time…”) Anyways, I’m nearly to the bus stop when I realize that I’ve stupidly left my umbrella behind at the store. “Oh well,” I thought, “How bad could it be? I’m sure that it will stay dry the short distance to the bus stop tomorrow morning.” Are those great final last words, or what? Not as good as Deadman’s last words (“Gee, from up here it almost looks like that guy with a hook has a gun!”), but definitely in the running.
