When I came across this trailer for a book, I had to take a peek. First off, I want to know is nothing sacred any longer? I guess since there was a Star Wars (“Death Troopers”) zombie book, it was only a matter of time before Star Trek had it’s turn.

When Star Trek opened in 2009 I ran out and purchased the soundtrack (as I do with most movies I like) and found that Michael Giacchino’s score was great driving music. Having listened to Jerry Goldsmith’s Star Trek scores for years it took a while for this new score to grow on me.

Paramount Pictures released a photo of Chris Hemsworth (Kirk’s father in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek) dressed as Thor from their upcoming movie that is set to release 2011.
In related news, Marvel Studios released that it is developing some of the lessor known Marvel characters such as Luke Cage, Dr. Strange, Ka-Zar, Dazzler, and Power Pack for smaller projects. Citing the example of Blade, which only cost a reported $45 million to produce but yielded $131 million worldwide (plus video and TV sales), garnered two sequels, and a short-lived TV series.

So, it’s day number 2 of the vacation and we arrived last night just after 1 AM. After a decent night’s sleep and a wonderful breakfast of homemade biscuits and gravy, I began my tech support duties for my parents on their Gateway netbook. Let’s just say that I am writing this post at midnight and I am still not done with cleaning viruses off their machine. I think I may end up doing a complete restore before all is said and done. But what was on the agenda for today? What things did we take in today? Well take a look after the break to see how my tech helped and hurt throughout today.

Saturday, April 10, 2010 can be considered the final nail in the coffin of The Star Trek Experience. Once the geekiest destination around, The Star Trek Experience closed 2 years ago leaving an empty space at the Las Vegas Hilton. Now Propworx has been tasked with auctioning off the remnants from Quark’s Restaurant and both the Klingon Encounter and the Borg 4-D Adventure.

 Movie Poster
Not many people can say that they know exactly what they were doing last week, let alone 30 years ago, but I know exactly; I was freezing my ass off in line for a movie. This movie was the first I ever stood in line for on opening day (but was not the last). Star Trek: The Motion Picture has spawned 11 sequels; although it’s not a great flick, it is the one that started it all!
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD

Back in February, I was able to see and play with the prototype of the Star Trek Wrath of Khan Phaser from Diamond. When I first saw this little jewel I knew that it was going to be one of my favorite role play toys. Now that it has finally come out, I have to say, that I was right.

 Cover to issue #1
This series opens after Nero’s Narada emerges from the black hole seconds after the events surrounding the destruction of the USS Kelvin shown in the opening scene of the movie as well as in the Countdown series. IDW is filling in the gap between their Star Trek – Countdown series (which was a direct prequel the Abram’s Star Trek movie reboot) by showing us where Nero spent those years waiting for Spock to jump into the new time line.

 Wrath of Khan Phaser
Recently at the New York Comic Con I was able to get a closer look at the Wrath of Khan phaser from Diamond Select. I have to say that the phaser is absolutely beautiful. Light weight with all of the bells and whistles (ok lights and sound effects) that we have come to expect in these quality reproductions. I think that this will soon become my favorite piece of Trek Tech.

The rain was heavy the day we arrived at the Detroit Science Center. It would have been fitting had we been there for an exhibit on Blade Runner, but we were there for the Star Trek Exhibit and frankly I couldn’t wait. Kelly (that would be Kelly Altenberger long time friend and first time camera man) and I were directed toward the “transporter” to be beamed up to the exhibit. Ok, so the transporter was the elevator and the beaming effect was not even attempted yet it was still a nice quick trip up to the floor.

Art Asylum and Diamond Distributers have brought out one of the most desired Star Trek props, The Original Series communicator. Made in a 1:1 scale, this replica is the inexpensive alternative to the Master Replicas version that sold out 2 years ago and now goes for big bucks on Ebay.

This is my favorite of all Star Trek movies. This movie is somewhat dated (it has a bit of a 80’s feel to it) but it is timeless in it’s own right.
I must say that I have made this a ritual every year to watch this movie for my birthday. So here I am on a Saturday night watching Wrath of Khan, 4 days befoure the day of my birth. This movie has a theme of age. Kirk is feeling old. He feels that his life could have been different had he made different choices. “My son, my life that could have been.”
